After listening to Nice Nice over and over, going to two of their shows, and lying awake at night wondering just how the ladies of the band get their make-up so perfect, I got the opportunity to interview Oh Darling. The Portland based band was in Los Angeles to record some songs, and I was able to meet them at the restaurant Swingers in the middle of town. Sitting down with Jasmine Ash (vocals, synths), Daven Hall (guitar), J. Marie Hall (bassist), and Jake Endicott (drums) was a lot of fun while drinking milkshakes outside under LA’s winter sun.

I started by asking them about their writing process. In a previous interview with Northwest Noise, they had stated that the writing process for Nice Nice was quick, with Jasmine singing and the songs getting done in record time. Was it the same for the new songs?

“Quicker,” Jake answered. “Yeah, maybe even faster,” Daven put in. “The structure was the same,” J. Marie added. “We just recorded all those songs the other day, like “Just Love . . . Anyway.””

So are any of their new songs favorite ones to play live? Daven answered, “All of them, and there are like five or six. “Holiday” is one I like.” Jake and Jasmine agreed.

Before we continue, let’s get some of their history. Before Oh Darling existed, back in early 2006, Jasmine had been doing her own solo projects. Daven had been in several bands as a bassist and definitely wanted a career in music. J. Marie, who also played the bass, enjoyed it, but wasn’t planning on making music her main focus. Jake, who only became an official member of the band earlier this year after touring with them for quite awhile, was in a band called Jonah. Jasmine and J. Marie were friends, but not close yet. One night, at a friend’s wedding, they decided to start a band.

After convincing Daven to not only join the band, but to learn guitar for it, they started practicing, and things just seemed right. But since both J. Marie and Daven knew the bass, I wondered why Daven was the one who had to learn guitar.

“Yeah,” Daven spoke up, “I’d like to know the answer to that, too!” J. Marie was all smiles. “We thought you had more potential.” “He’s a natural,” Jasmine added. Jake added, smiling, “His tone is incredible, and his rig is sweet.” Daven picked up on the joke. “One thing I’ve noticed,” he started, “is that after a show people will come up to me and start talking to me about tone, I hear the word ‘tone’ a lot, and about my rig a lot, like my pedals. But when I was a bass player, that would never happen. I’ve learned a lot about both those things, about guitar players in general.”

I was curious to know how they came up with the art for the CD’s cover. “A good friend of ours is a great artist and we knew that we wanted to use his work because we love it,” Jasmine said. “He actually made that cover years ago, and we re-found it. And we just knew the moment we saw it that it was right.”

under the tuscan sun download free Although the words “Oh Darling” usually conjure up a Beatles song, that didn’t have anything to do with their choice of band name. In that interview with Northwest Noise, they had said that there were two or three names they were choosing from. “Usually when something is right, we just know,” J. Marie said. “Conversely,” Jake devilishly started out, “When we’re wrong we don’t know. And we still go with it.” Jasmine: “We’re always fast when we make decisions.” Jake finished up, “We just speed through danger.”

Jake is kind of the troublemaker of the group. At a recent concert I attended, he might have spoken more than Jasmine, the singer. Jake didn’t even have a mic, but he was quite vocal about all manner of topics. Pointedly looking towards the rest of the band, I asked what was the craziest thing Jake’s done on stage. Jasmine answered, “When we were doing a show in Portland, he threw a drumstick up and caught it. Although no one saw him catch it, he was so excited that he ran a lap.” Jake added, “It was a victory lap! People were scared. I was running pretty fast.”
бесплатно порнуху скачать
Jake continued to interject, as he had at the show. When I asked J. Marie and Jasmine, who are known for being quite the fashionistas on and off stage, about what they though Michelle Obama should wear for her inauguration gown, Jake answered instead. “She should be wear a muumuu,” he answered, before Jasmine, pretending to be haughty, told him, “The question was for J. Marie and I.” Jake smiled, and J. Marie continued: “Definitely something classic.” Jasmine agreed, “Yeah, and nothing too crazy in the color department. She has so much potential, and she’s such a beautiful woman.”

Staying with the current events theme, I asked what they were all listening to. J. Marie started, “Random Impulse.” Daven’s answer was Persephone’s Bees, which was very exciting to me since they are a band I very much like. Jake likes them, too: “There’s injustice in the music business that that band got dropped and is no longer together.” Before we got too lost in the sad tale, J. Marie added that the new Kings of Leon record was good and Jake answered that he’d been listening to Guns N’ Roses, specifically Appetite for Destruction, along with Stryper. Jasmine put in for Phantom Planet and Cold War Kids, and said that she liked the new Franz Ferdinand album.

Switching gears entirely, I turned to Jasmine and asked how her setup at center stage came to be. Generally, with her digital piano and her mini-Korg, she has a small, baseball-sized toy bunny sitting atop her equipment. There are also usually lights and a lit-up plastic skull. Jasmine started with the rabbit. “I love bunnies. I always have, and that bunny was a gift from an old friend, and he’s so tiny, so I put him up there, and then it kind of became my good luck charm. My setup, with the equipment, is so ridiculous because it’s so big, so was I felt like I needed to dress it up. So the bunny’s name is Button.” J. Marie interjected: “One time she thought she’d lost Button and it was this big thing.” Jasmine smiled. “Yeah, that was bad. Also, the bunny that is in our press release photos is my rabbit, whose name is Bunson.” Being a big Muppet fan, I asked if he was named after the scientist Muppet Bunson, who is Beaker’s superior. “No,” Jasmine started. “Just ‘cause it has ‘bun’ in it. But I always call him The Bunny.” “I call him Buns,” J. Marie added. Jake smiled devilishly. “I call him delicious.”

The band’s fun personality comes across on stage, both in their presence and their creativity. There will be more shows in LA early in ’09, and a possibility for a tour. Visually and musically, this band is stunning, so be sure to see them.

Two thumbs up to the awesome band from Portlant Oregon. It’s hard to find bands these days with the right chemistry, but from the backing musicianship to the engaging vocals, Oh Darling is down right addictive. The sound will grab hold of your inner 80’s child and remind you of what it is you loved about not so mainstream indie pop from that era, yet still retaining enough modern embellishments to play with your feelings of Deja vu in a very pleasant way. As I took to enjoying this band’s songs, I noticed something very familiar to me in Jasmine Ash’s voice. So, I went rummaging through the music libraries at my disposal until finally it hit me what it was. If you listen carefully to Jasmine’s voice, you will sometimes hear a slight resemblence to the voice of Donna Lewis. But, don’t think for a second that Jasmine is standing in Donna’s shadow. The other members of Oh Darling really pull together to help Jasmine give a unique performance that leaves you experiencing a plethora of interesting emotions. I especially like some of the more odd organic guitar sounds Daven Hall gets from his rig. So,check these guys out and don’t forget to look for Oh Darling on Itunes.

Marie Hall on bass, Daven Hall on guitar and Jake Endicott on drums, the group started playing together in 2006 and released its debut album, “Nice Nice,” this September.

With a sound that is influenced by The Pixies, Blondie and Built to Spill, the members of Oh Darling write sweet, straightforward pop songs with charming melodies.

“They’re cute,” says Tom Hillard of Creative Works Records, the independent Los Angeles label that signed Oh Darling for “Nice Nice.” The album was produced by Gregg Williams (The Daddy Warhols, Blitzen Trapper). Tracks on the album showcase the band’s musicianship, as well as its indie and ’80s rock electro-pop background.

“They’ve been playing music with other bands around Portland forever,” Hillard says, “When they finally met, it was like a match made in heaven. They’re into bunnies, they wear the same outfits and they decorate the stage with Day of the Dead stuff.”

The Portland Tribune stated that “It’s impossible not to get a contact buzz from the band’s buoyant, charming pop.”

Indeed, Oh Darling has been spending a lot of time in Southern California. The group is getting ready to make the big move to the city and will soon hit the road for a tour with L.A. indie rockers Eighty Eight.

Portland has the fertile soil and the ability to grow the perfect indie rock band. Their latest crop includes the breathy, delicate sounds of Jasmine Ash and Oh Darling. Oh Darling are Jasmine Ash on vocals and keyboards, J.Marie Hall on bass, DavenHall on guitar, and Jake Endicott on Drums. Playing music for years and their immediate chemistry allowed Oh Darling to come to fruition. It began with a conversation of the idea to write and play music together between Jasmine and J.Marie at a wedding. It sounds so simple and the results seem so pure. Recently signed to Creative Works Records and North Star Media, they released their debut album Nice, Nice on September 16th.
Jasmine Ash’s vocals sooth me like a lullaby (almost like Harriet Wheeler’s of The Sundays) while the bubblegum pop back beat ushers my feet in the right direction. So when you see me bobbing my head to my ipod beaming with happiness, don’t start thinking, “Look at this fool. He needs to wipe that stooopid grin off his face. He makes me sick.” You should think, “Wow, with that kind of head bop and smile he must be listening to Oh Darling. Rad!”

Portland, Oregon’s latest contribution to the world of indie pop music, Oh Darling, won’t remind you of The Beatles. But this engaging and energetic quintet may suggest early Go-Go’s, Blond Redhead, and, at least when it comes to lead singer Jasmine Ash, Portishead’s Beth Gibbons — a compliment indeed. Now, this is distinguished company for any band, especially one that has yet to release an album. But Oh Darling’s first, Nice Nice, is set to drop on September 16. Whatever you do, buy the disc. Just buy it. Or buy and download it now from Amazon.

When you do, you’ll discover a band possessing several distinct pedigrees, including those mentioned above. But more importantly, you will have before you a band that sounds comfortably familiar and yet cutting edge. Oh Darling is pop music, clearly. But you’ll find in Nice Nice elements of electronic music, what used to be called trip-hop, and dance (although that is the least of what Nice Nice

is about). This is a preview only. But there’s no reason to think “Shoulda Never,” or “The Ocean,” or the upbeat and infectious “Electrocute” are not precursors to the album’s remaining seven cuts.

Nice Nice is filled with, above all else, the distinctly assertive but at times fragile voice of Ash. She does, indeed, sound at times like Gibbons, but her tendency is to stay light and soft, yet without allowing the fuzzed-down guitars or the sharp-as-a-nail drums to subsume her ethereality. Ash’s voice can also sound emphatic and pointed, as it does in the edgy and sardonic “Electrocute,” the album’s best, though way too short, illustration of Ash’s flexibility. On Nice Nice not everything is airy and lethargic; strong pop hooks may not abound, but they are a vital part of what the album is all about: subtle genre-bending music that plays as well on Sunday morning (”The Ocean”) and it did the night before (”Waking Up on A Train”).

Mark your calendars: Nice Nice on September 16.

Local indie-pop sensations Oh Darling! are packing up and moving to Los Angeles soon, and Portland will be a darker place without their sunny, smile-inducing indie-pop. The band’s debut album, “Nice Nice,” is packed full of deliciously charming indie-pop concoctions, and there’s not a cuter musical combo than this stylish boy/girl group. Tonight’s show is a free showcase of local music that also includes the rambunctious indie-rock of the NY Rifles and the seductive dance-rock of Another Cynthia, as well as promising trio the Wanteds, who have a new album coming out in September.

Pioneers of the emerging Portland pop explosion, Oh Darling deliver an intoxicating blend of indie rock that’s more inspired by Day of the Dead festivals than cookie-cutter confections. The LA-based group’s debut album, Nice Nice was produced by Gregg Williams (the Dandy Warhols) with ten cuts of unapologetic, perfectly crafted pop punch. Charismatic lead singer Jasmine Ash is a siren onstage — a powerhouse persona who’s a little bit Courtney Love, a little bit Karen Carpenter — singing sly tracks that depict Southland mornings and obsession (”Waking Up on a Train”). Tonight, the band celebrates the release of Nice Nice with a Hotel Café cookout geared toward making you its newest fan.

album review by my good buddy Justin for NW Noise:

“Oh Darling is no mere backing band for [lead vocal] Jasmine Ash. Each band member contributes heavily to the final project, resulting in ten tracks of beautiful indie pop rock. The album opens with a simple guitar riff on “Shoulda Never” before the rest of the band kicks in, leading to a rocking chorus. Guitarist Daven is actually new to the instrument, having played bass in previous bands and being told he would need to learn a new instrument in order to join Oh Darling… Most songs last no longer than three minutes, leaving the listener begging for more. However, it would be unfair to say that what Oh Darling does on Nice Nice is simple. There isn’t anything conventional about putting together an album this good.”

Of course, not every band that begins under these auspices ends up on a happy note, but Portland, Orgeon’s Oh Darling has much for going for it. Their chemistry is unique, with several songs being written in just a few days-the quality doesn’t suffer from the quickness-and the result is an extremely memorable indie rock sound. Jasmine Ash had me going back to some very early Go-Go’s with her assertive vccals, and J.

In this busy past weekend of mine, let me express just how great it was. Certainly a good time was needed by myself to make up for the week I had leading up to the weekend. And the action and excitement thankfully did not disappoint.

Friday night was the Oh Darling CD Release at the Doug Fir Lounge. My friend, Bryan, describes the Doug Fir as “Twin Peaks meets The Jetsons.” Being a huge Twin Peaks fan, that probably explains why I love the place so much (though admittedly, I never really got into The Jetsons). The show was incredible, as is the debut CD from the Darlings, Nice Nice. Oh Darling truly represents some of the best talent Portland has to offer and this concert proved it once again. As an added bonus, I got to hang with lead singer Jasmine Ash after the show, which made my weekend. Fellow Noise Boy Tim wrote a brief review on the Northwest Noise website about the show that you can view here.

Saturday night I attended my first Soju Party. Many of you may not know what soju is, so let me enlighten you as I recently received my honorary Asian card (which is totally legit since it was given to me by real Asians!). Soju is a Korean distilled beverage made from rice or some other starch (or so Wikipedia tells me…) that is traditionally drank in a group. The taste is similar to vodka, meaning I really didn’t enjoy it, even when mixed with fruit and yogurt, resulting in a sort of alcohol smoothie taken as a shot. The etiquette regarding drinking it is quite complicated, though our group neglected to observe most of those rules. It certainly was an interesting experience to say the least and a different way to watch the Ducks get killed by USC in football (the low point of the weekend).

After the soju, I headed out to watch my friends, Tea For Julie (who also opened for the Oh Darling CD Release Show) at a house party. Their set was being filmed for a Live From Portland concert DVD featuring about 30 local bands. Who exactly was filming the DVD or what exactly it was for, I cannot tell you. I can, however, tell you that the bands were filmed in a room with banana yellow walls and a bright pink hardwood floor. It looked like something out of a Bjork video. I’m curious to see how it turns out. While they were crammed into the filming room and had to deal with lackluster acoustics, Tea For Julie had a great set, playing seven songs, mostly from their latest release, The Sense In Tying Knots.

Sunday I attended a going away BBQ for my friend Amanda, who is heading back East to Washington DC. I wish her all the best in her latest adventure. Also, Debra Arlyn’s feature on PDXposed aired, with me in a very brief appearance. The actual interview that took place was significantly longer, but watching the segment, I realized that John, the host, asked myself and Debra almost identical questions and becoming such close friends with Debra over the past year, we had nearly identical answers. And let’s be honest, Debra is going to be far more entertaining to watch and listen to than me. Paul Creighton, the lead singer from Intervision, was also interviewed for the piece. You can watch the show below; Debra’s segment is the last few minutes of the clip.

(Doug Fir, 830 E Burnside) Sweet and peppy tracks pour forth from Portland’s Oh Darling, a team of four whose album Nice Nice is released tonight. Bits of Blondie and the Pixies peek out of the rock/pop crew’s sound, along with some new millennium rhythm and a little bit of garage rock as well. Oh Darling have got that sweet-like-candy sound down, as their high-pitched vocals-the stylish Jasmine Ash’s voice makes Nina Persson’s sound deep in comparison-are met with a grand dose of bass guitar and smashing drums, rendering the band a pleasant blend of the rock-hard and the ultra-soft. Alright, I’ll admit it, a have a bit of a thing for Portland singer/songwriter Jasmine Ash. Yes, every time I talk to her, I turn into a 14 year old girl flipping through the pages of Tiger Beat looking at pictures of Orlando Bloom. But what’s not to like about her: she’s a pretty girl, with a great sense of fashion (along with band mate J. Marie), and she loves bunnies. However, this post is not about my admittedly borderline-concerning crush for Jasmine. Nay, it is about the debut album Nice Nice from Jasmine’s band, Oh Darling.

I was first introduced to Jasmine on her solo album Shine . I was drawn to her Lisa Loeb-esque vocals and her solid songwriting. I knew that she was also in a band which I had been told was quite different from her solo stuff. I was anxious to hear how that material would sound, though I did have concerns that a band might distract from all of the things I liked about Jasmine’s solo work. A few months later, a copy of Nice Nice was sitting on my desk. I couldn’t have been more wrong about my concerns…

download 3000 miles to graceland dvdrip

Oh Darling is no mere backing band for Jasmine. Each band member contributes heavily to the final project, resulting in ten tracks of beautiful indie pop rock. The album opens with a simple guitar riff on “Shoulda Never” before the rest of the band kicks in, leading to a rocking chorus. Guitarist Daven is actually new to the instrument, having played bass in previous bands and being told he would need to learn a new instrument in order to join Oh Darling (bassist J. Marie had that role locked down already). Whether the simplicity in his playing is due to his lack of experience or intentional is not important. It works. In fact, the strength of the whole band lies in its unassumingness. Nobody is trying to outshine one another in their playing. Most songs last no longer than three minutes, leaving the listener begging for more. However, it would be unfair to say that what Oh Darling does on Nice Nice is simple. There isn’t anything conventional about putting together an album this good.

It’s hard to pick a favorite track since they are all solid, but “Blindspot” is certainly a highlight for me; three beautiful minutes of Jasmine’s voice over a killer bass line from J. Marie, highlighted at the end by Jasmine’s synth. However, “Electrocute,” “Hey.Stay.Wait.Explode,” and “Against A Skyline” have all been favorites at one time or another since I received a copy of the album. The music is happy, fun, danceable and although just released this past week, was a perfect summer album for those of us that were lucky enough to get a copy before the release date. There are even a couple videos to promote the album, filmed by Kyle Oddson; the video for “Waking Up On A Train” was filmed at the Secret Society Ballroom and the streets of Portland.

Oh Darling celebrates their CD release in Portland at the Doug Fir Lounge on Oct. 3rd. I’ve caught them in concert a couple of times already and they put on an excellent show (new drummer Jake adds quite a bit of energy to the live experience). UHF and friends of Northwest Noise, Tea For Julie, are also on the bill. Be sure to check out some of the best live music Portland has to offer. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Nice Nice
